Brandon’s Entry- What’s in a Name?

We are about to begin rehearsals for our show, and I am reminded how extremely rewarding it is to create something out of nothing. This company was just an idea, and now it’s becoming a reality.  We want to continue to build a team of people who believe in our mission, but we are often asked why “Duel” Theatre? Isn’t that aggressive and confrontational?

   Our initial thoughts of a name derived from the word "challenge." Why not create a home where we challenge artists as well as audiences; not simply to just entertain, but create such strong, clear, specific "dueling" points of view? Bring the fight to the stage! We wanted to build relationships with professionals that relate to a particular piece. We want to build opportunities for others to be a part of the creative process. We want to give the audience a chance to have a conversation after a show and start a dialogue. Sharing knowledge can't be such a bad thing, right?

    Whether it be religion, spirituality, philosophy, science, logic, or politics there is always a "duality" within a text, way of thought, or equation. An opposite if you will. Good/Evil. Yin/Yang. Positive/negative. Republican/Democrat. Each offers a distinct strong, and specific point of view. We wanted to reinvigorate the theatrical performance with these aspects at the core. And we hope to do so with our upcoming show. We are almost there!

    My friends and family tell me “your first attempt is the most difficult, but also the most rewarding”. We have learned so much and have gained amazing support along the way. We can't thank you enough.

It’s official! Duel Theatre will be producing TAPE by Stephen Belber from November 13-27 at Center Stage, NY. "A sordid beautiful take on human relationships", "...real talk, real characters, real situations—a real play." Its full of drama, full of comedy, and its a really provocative night at the theatre.

We had the great fortune to perform this play for Room 6 Theatre in Philadelphia two summers ago. The production was strong, we only wish more people could have seen his poignant piece. We have the same director, and close to that original cast, and we are so excited to be bringing it to NYC.
